Adam Green’s “Frozen” – Indie Horror Flick You Should Check Out

Word just got out today that Frozen will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 28 (in the U.S. and Canada, of course).

Adam Green, the writer-director (who’s also known for his work on Hatchet), was clearly adamant about its release nationwide instead of just a limited run by urging people to ask their local theater’s manager to contact Anchor Bay to send a print of the film for a showing. At one point, I thought another Paranormal Activity phenomenon was gonna happen. Unfortunately, it only got up to 106 theaters at its peak, but I still give him credit for trying. It currently holds a 47% on RottenTomatoes with an average rating of 5.4/10, while it has a normalized rating of 43 out of 100 in Metacritic. That may not be the most positive of critical reception, but I’m pretty confident this is a decent film far better than the extremely mediocre remakes we see nowadays (yes, I’m looking at you, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street), and this was what Green was gunning for: horror fans complaining about all these horrendous remakes need to stand up and speak up for more original genre films.

Now, I haven’t seen the film yet, and, yes, I am hypocritical for not taking a stand myself and asking my local theater manager to ask them for a print of the movie. But I think people should see more of these films instead of something like Prom Night, which amazingly opened with $20.8 million in its first weekend. So check it out on DVD or Blu-ray!

Here’s the plot synopsis:

Starring Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore and Emma Bell, Frozen charts the nightmare of three snowboarders when they get stranded on a ski chairlift taking them to the last run of the day. When the ski patrol switches off the night lights, the threesome realize with growing panic and dread that they’ve been left behind, dangling high off the ground with no way down. With the resort closed until the following weekend, and frostbite and hypothermia already setting in, the trio is forced to take desperate measures to escape off the mountain before they freeze to death. Once they make their move, they discover with horror that they have much more to fear than just the frigid cold. As they combat the unrelenting forces of nature and other unexpected obstacles, they start to question if their will to survive is strong enough to overcome the worst ways to die.
